Navarro Family History
My father Raymond Navarro, Sr., who is Fats' younger brother, was born
7/28/1947. My father's father Theodore Navarro, Sr. was born 12/18/1901
and died 12/1957. Theodore Navarro, Sr. was also father to Theodore, Jr.
or "Fats" as we know him. Theodore Navarro, Sr. was the son of Agustin
Navarro and Catherine Shavers, which explains the connection between
my uncle Fats and trumpet great Charlie Shavers. Here are some other
- Fats' mother, Miriam Williams, was Theodore, Sr's. second wife.
- Raymond's mother Annie Eady Navarro is still living. She was
Theodore, Sr's. third wife.
- Theodoris Navarro Gonsalves, born 10/8/51, is the daughter of
Theodore, Sr. and Annie.
- Theodore, Sr. and Miriam Williams are parents of Fats, Delores,
and Elizabeth. Delores resides in Key West and Elizabeth resides
- Fats also has an older sister from Theodore, Sr's. first wife
named Florelle. Florelle also resides in Key West.
My grandmother Annie and Aunt Theodoris still live in Fats' childhood
home at 828 Thomas Street, in Key West, Florida. I have always been
afraid of the house, primarily because I have to sleep in Fats' old room.
I recently found out that it was his old room, and maybe that accounts
for the pervasive eerie feelings I experience. Theodoris' husband Richard,
who is a painter, swears that he gains inspiration in "that room."
Theodoris told me tonight, that she was recently visited by a Shavers
cousin, who said people used to line up on the sidewalk to hear Fats
blow the horn in "that room." In 1995 a man from Miami approached my
Aunt Theodoris about naming a street in Miami after Fats. People continue
to approach my Grandmother's home and inquire about Fats' history!
Although Fats never liked Key West, it loves him.
